HANOI, 09 June 2026 (TATOLI) – Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão joined regional leaders, policymakers, diplomats, and experts at the ASEAN Future Forum (AFF) 2026 in Hanoi, where discussions focused on the future of Southeast Asia under the theme “Shaping Our Future Together: Peace, Prosperity and People-Centred Development.”
The forum, hosted by Vietnam from June 9 to 10, has become an important platform for dialogue on ASEAN’s future, bringing together leaders from across the region to exchange views on peace, economic growth, regional resilience, and people-centered development.
Addressing the forum, Prime Minister Xanana highlighted the importance of regional solidarity and cooperation in responding to emerging challenges and ensuring sustainable development for all ASEAN member states. He stressed that ASEAN’s strength lies in unity, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to improving the lives of its people.
The Timorese leader also underlined the significance of Timor-Leste’s integration into ASEAN, describing regional cooperation as a key driver for economic transformation, human development, and long-term stability. He reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s commitment to contributing constructively to ASEAN’s vision of a peaceful, prosperous, and inclusive region.
Prime Minister Xanana emphasized that the future of ASEAN should be guided not only by economic growth but also by policies that place people at the center of development. He noted that investment in education, human resources, innovation, and connectivity would be essential for building a stronger and more resilient regional community.
The forum was attended by several regional leaders, including Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn.
Prime Minister Xanana’s participation in the ASEAN Future Forum forms part of his official visit to Vietnam and reflects Timor-Leste’s growing engagement with regional partners as the country advances its ASEAN integration process.
The two-day forum is expected to generate new ideas and policy recommendations aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and supporting the continued development of the ASEAN Community.
