DILI, 12 May 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta will travel to Singapore from May 31 to June 1, 2025, to attend the 22nd International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue – the annual conference on Indo-Pacific security that brings together government ministers and senior officials, as well as business leaders and security experts, on Asia’s developing security challenges.

While in Singapore, Horta will also have the opportunity to meet with other leaders to discuss and strengthen Timor-Leste’s defense relationships with Southeast Asian countries in the region.

To this end, the National Parliament (PN) has today approved Horta’s trip, with 37 votes in favor, 10 against, and four abstentions.

This is the second time Horta will attend the high-level dialogue since taking office in 2022.

Last year, Horta delivered a major statement on ‘Enhancing Crisis Management Amid Rising Competition’ at the 21st IISS, in which he presented his perspectives on rising tensions between great powers and how countries could help ease them through crisis management mechanisms.”

The Shangri-La Dialogue, convened by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), has grown into the preeminent forum for the discussion of security issues in the Asia-Pacific region.

More than 40 countries are expected to participate in this year’s summit, including defense ministers, military leaders and senior defense officials, as well as business leaders and security experts, from across the Asia-Pacific, Europe, North America and beyond to discuss critical security challenges.

IISS has announced that the French President, Emmanuel Macron, and the Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Bin Ibrahim, would deliver addresses at the 22nd IISS Shangri-La Dialogue.

The Dialogue will again take place at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore.
