DILI, 27 April 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic Jose Ramos-Horta received the President of the National Parliament, Maria Fernanda Lay, today at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace to review progress on key national priorities.
A central focus of the meeting was the formal establishment of the Supreme Court of Justice.
Fernanda Lay informed the Head of State that the Superior Council of the Magistracy of Portugal has officially confirmed its readiness to support the selection and testing of judges.
This partnership is expected to facilitate the installation of the Supreme Court before the end of this year, fulfilling a strategic objective of the Presidency.
Fernanda Lay also briefed the President on measures being taken by the National Parliament to ensure fiscal discipline, including the reduction of oversight travel for parliamentary commissions.
These austerity measures aim to preserve the 2026 budget in response to the costs of fuel imports including anticipated a forthcoming budget rectification from the Government to address national fuel reserves and long-term energy security.
Finally, the discussion touched upon the importance of institutional dignity and parliamentary decorum. Fernanda Lay expressed her regret over the recent use of inappropriate language within the plenary sessions, echoing the President’s commitment to civic ethics.
She emphasized that political benches hold the primary responsibility for the conduct of their members, noting that as representatives of the People, Members of Parliament must maintain a high standard of professional and ethical behavior to preserve public trust in the nation’s democratic institutions.
