DILI, 08 July 2026 (TATOLI) – Delegation of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, led by the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Nino Pereira, and accompanied by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland, António da Conceição, participated in the Sixty-Eighth Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
The Assemblies bring together WIPO Member States to discuss key intellectual property (IP) issues, adopt decisions on the Organization’s work and budget, and strengthen international cooperation to promote innovation, creativity and sustainable development.
In a statement, Minister Nino Pereira reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening the national intellectual property system and expressed appreciation for WIPO’s continued support. He highlighted that, following Timor-Leste’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and membership in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), intellectual property has become an important pillar of national development.
The Minister also informed Member States that Timor-Leste’s Industrial Property Code is in the final stage of parliamentary approval and will provide the legal foundation for establishing the country’s first National Intellectual Property Office.
On the margins of the Assemblies, the Timor-Leste delegation will hold bilateral meetings with WIPO, Member States and partner intellectual property offices to strengthen cooperation and mobilize technical assistance for the implementation of the Industrial Property Code, the establishment of the National Intellectual Property Office and the continued development of Timor-Leste’s intellectual property ecosystem.
