Timor-Leste seeks stronger education ties with Spain

DILI, 30 April 2026 (TATOLI) — Timor-Leste and Spain reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties following talks held on the sidelines of the 25th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.

Timor-Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, met with Spain’s Secretary General for the European Union, Carlos Moreno Blanco, to review the current state of relations and explore ways to expand cooperation in several strategic areas.

The meeting was held in a “friendly and constructive atmosphere,” with both sides exchanging views on opportunities to deepen collaboration.

Discussions focused on education, capacity building, cultural exchanges and language training programs for diplomats and university students.

Both countries also reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening the longstanding partnership between Timor-Leste and Spain.

The two sides agreed to continue follow-up technical discussions through established diplomatic channels to advance the identified priority areas of cooperation.

The bilateral talks took place on the margins of the 25th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting, which brought together foreign ministers and senior officials from Southeast Asian and European countries to discuss regional and global cooperation.
