DILI, 13 january 2025 (TATOLI) – The newly appointed Ambassador of Timor-Leste to Portugal, Manuel António Araújo Serrano, presented his credentials to Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on monday, january 12, 2025.
The ceremony took place at the Belém Palace, marking the formal start of Serrano’s diplomatic mission in Portugal.
During the same ceremony, President Marcelo also received credentials from newly appointed ambassadors of several other countries, including the Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic, Konstantina Kamitsi, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, Yang Yirui, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Finland, Christian Lindholm, the Ambassador of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, Carolina Ache Batlle.
The President also accepted credentials from several non-resident ambassadors, including Corinne A. Brunet from Benin, María Mjöll Jónsdóttir from Iceland, Kalamoungkhoune Souphanouvong from Laos, and Mohamed Ali Nur Hagi from Somalia.
The accreditation ceremony reaffirmed Portugal’s diplomatic relations with Timor-Leste and other partner countries.
The bilateral relationship between Timor-Leste and Portugal is a deep and multifaceted partnership, rooted in shared history, language, and culture. This link is reinforced by 77 bilateral agreements and a strategic cooperation program that has been active since 2011. Portugal’s indispensable support in critical sectors such as education, justice, and defence, combined with high-level, consistent political dialogue, makes Timor-Leste one of the most vital and sustainable international partners.
