“Workers are TL’s new heroes,” Ruak says

DILI, 01 may 2022 (TATOLI) – Timorese Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, considered workers as the new heroes for the National Development of Timor-Leste.

Ruak released the statement to commemorate International Workers’ Day or Labor Day; By praising workers as new heroes for Timor-Leste’s development.

“The celebration of the International Workers’ Day or Labor Day is important to recognize the role of Timorese workers in contributing to the national development of the nation,” Ruak said in a statement released, on sunday (01/05).

He said workers were the new heroes, especially in the new phases of the national development: “The contribution of the workers will help strengthen our nation to ensure a prosperous, strong and secure Timor-Leste.”

Ruak said Labor Day wasn’t only for everyone to have a day off, adding it was a special day for the promotion of the performance, discipline, professionalism, good spirit, and teamwork of employees across various sectors to speed up productivity growth in the country.

He stressed that workers were the principal resources of a family, community, company, institution, and nation, saying, therefore, courage and inspiration were crucial for promoting excellence in the employees to face challenges ahead.

“On behalf of the Government of Timor-Leste, I thank all parties, including the Timorese people and foreign nationals who had contributed to Timor-Leste’s dream of achieving a modern, developed, and prosperous nation in the future,” Ruak concluded.

On the same day, Timorese workers called on the government of Timor-Leste to increase Timor-Leste’s monthly minimum wage from US$115 to US$200.

The workers made the call in a long march organized by Timor-Leste’s Trade Union Confederation (KSTL), in the capital Dili, to celebrate Labor Day.
