DILI, 08 may 2024 (TATOLI) – Every year, on may 6, people around the world come together to celebrate World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. This special day is all about appreciating the important ideas behind the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
“We use this day to remember Henry Dunant, who started the International Committee of the Red Cross and was the first person to win the Noble Peace Prize,” said in a statement.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement supports millions of people around the world every year – in times of conflict, natural disaster, and crisis. Drawing on more than 150 years of humanitarian action, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is committed to providing relevant and timely humanitarian service to vulnerable communities and into the future, This year’s theme is “Keeping Humanity Alive.”
Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (CVTL) celebrates this important day in Dili with a blood donation drive together with the National Hospital.
CVTL Secretary General Luis Pedro Pinto said: “Millions of Red Cross and Red Crescent staff around the world reach more than 160 million people every year, providing a diverse and innovative range of impartial services: “But our approach is universal, guided at every turn by our Fundamental Principles Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality.”
He said in Timor-Leste: “We reached 10’s of 1000 of vulnerable people across Timor-Leste, building stronger communities through CVTL’s many programs, including Healthy Youth, Disaster Risk Reduction, Blood Donations, Community Health, Nutrition Programs, Livelihoods, First Aid, and many more.
