DILI, 25 september , 2020 (TATOLI) – The President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Francisco Guterres Lú Olo, is concerned about the self-determination of the Sahrawi people and argues that the United Nations mission has little progress.
“In Western Sahara, the United Nations Mission – MINURSO – has been in the territory for almost three decades, but we have not yet seen satisfactory progress. It is urgent to appoint a Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara in order to speed up the process of negotiations between the parties to the conflict and to find a solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people the exercise of the right to self-determination, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other relevant Resolutions,” said President Francisco Guterres Lú Olo. , in delivering a message to the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly.
Lú Olo also said that 2020 is the last year of the third international decade for the elimination of colonialism.
The Timorese President also recalled diplomatic relations with the Israeli and Palestinian states and called for a peaceful solution to this “so martyred region”.
“It is with humility that I tell you: I have experience of suffering and adversity and I am deeply convinced that together we will come out stronger and win,” he said.
