LIQUIÇÁ, 08 october 2020 (TATOLI) – State Secretary of Fishing, Ilídio de Araujo, has asked the community living in Ulmera village, Liquiça, not to destroy the mangroves growing in the area, since the site is protected.
According to him, some mangroves are not growing and have become dry due to people taking worms out from the root system as bait for fishing. This behaviour is one reason many mangroves fail to grow.
“Ulmera is a protected area, so it is important that we do not destroy the mangroves that have been planted in the area,” he said.
He said the government has put in the effort to create a policy for the control and prohibition of people doing fishing in the protected areas.
The village head, Martino Correia said the local authority would take into consideration, what the government has said, they will attempt to control the community and encourage them not to destroy the mangroves growing in the sea.
“This is a big responsibility for us to ensure that we secure the mangrove trees that have been planted,” he said.
Mr Correia promised to instruct the community to take care and control the mangroves that have just planted.
