DÍLI, october 13, 2020 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste congratulates the World Food Program (WFP) for the 2020 award of Nobel Peace Prize.
The President for the Council of Ministers, Fidélis Magalhães, on behalf of the Government and the people of Timor-Leste give the attention and regards to the entire WFP team for the valuable work recognition.
“We also recognize the partnership working of the World Food Program with the Government of Timor-Leste in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”, Mr. Magalhães said.
The PCM also commended WFP “for its efforts in the fight against hunger, for its contributions to the improvement of peace conditions in conflict zones and also for playing a major role in preventing the use of hunger. as a weapon of war and conflict”.
“This award represents recognition for the important work carried out by this humanitarian organization, which had provided in 2019, the assistance to almost 100 million people in 88 countries,” according to the press document.
It is also highlighting about the WFP working collaboration and coordination with the Government of Timor-Leste to achieve the SDGs with regard to food security, nutrition and hunger programs, also provides important support in the response to the impacts of covid-19.
“With the humanitarian flight service between Kuala Lumpur and Dili, for passengers and medical cargo, it was possible for Timor-Leste to reduce the isolation caused by the covid-19 pandemic, bringing medical equipment to the country and allowing the movement of humanitarian professionals from several agencies present in the country, to support the response to covid-19”, says the note.
