Dili, 22 October 2020 (TATOLI) – The Timorese Government and European Union (EU) organised “Steering Committee meeting’ to determine the progress for the implementation of cooperation between Timor-Leste and European Union (EU).
The meeting is marked as a second meeting from the committee of good governance, led by the Vice-Minster of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Julião da Silva and the Ambassador of the EU, Andrew Jacob.
The meeting was aimed at monitoring and evaluating the framework activities in the project of Management and Public Finance supervision of decentralisation which is supported by the EU.
Ambassador of UE, Andrew Jacob said, the EU will continue to support Timor-Leste in the journey of accelerating the sustainability of economic growth which will improve work for all citizens in the country.
“Now we see significant challenge especially during the current Pandemic situation, hence why the EU will support Timor-Leste in key areas such as Finance Management and decentralisation,” Mr Jacob said.
He said the EU is pleased to have a partnership with Timor-Leste. They are also delighted with the government system, which allows them to Pay their funds directly to the government.
The total budget funded by the EU to support Timor-Leste’s program such as Decentralization, improvement of public finance, nutrition and other programs is $7.6 million.
Foreign Affairs Vice-Minister, Julião da Silva said, this annual meeting is organised to focus on programs and their achievements by the Government with EU support.
“This meeting is to review the achievements that have been made by Timor-Leste along with the support from the EU to our Civil Society. Thus today we are gathered here to focus on this objective,” he said.
In this period, we will focus more on two crucial issues, which is decentralisation and deconcentrating to accelerate the politics of government.
“I hope that this meeting, Allows the EU to obtain enough information to continue support Timor-Leste,” he said.
