TL-Cuba discuss the establishment of specialized medical training in Timor-Leste

DILI, march 18, 2021 (TATOLI) – The Government’s Ministry of Health and the Government of Cuba discussed the possibility to implement a specialized medical training in Timor-Leste.

The discussion was between the Minister of Health of Timor-Leste, Odete Maria Freitas Belo and the Ambassador of Cuba to Timor-Leste, Omar Marrero Betancourt.

“We talked about the possibility on developing specialized medical training in Timor-Leste, after several years of administering training in the field of General Medicine. Then, a new course can be created at UNTL”, Minister of Health, Odete Belo said told the journalist after the Thursday (03/18), meeting at the Ministry of Health office, Caicoli Dili.

Ms Viegas at the same time, thanked the Ambassador for the initiative and request for the preparation of the document to be studied by both parties regarding the conditions, mechanisms and preparations that will be implemented before the training starts.

“We have to consider and define which priority areas are to be administered in this training, especially with regard to the highest incidence disease in Timor-Leste”, She said.

It is pointed out that the meeting between both countries, Cuba and Timor-Leste was celebrated in 2003 after Timor-Leste’s restoration of Independence by the first President of Timor-Leste, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmãos and the President of Cuba, Fidel Castro, the cooperation took place at a meeting held in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

Within the cooperation scope, the Cuban Medical Brigade has already managed to train more than a thousand Timorese doctors, currently deployed in various places across 13 municipalities in Timor-Leste.
