DILI, april 19, 2021 (TATOLI) – The Director-General of the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE), Acilino Manuel Branco, said today that STAE will allocate one million US dollars to change the current electoral card to the new one. biometric electronic card to be used in the next elections.
“The price of each current electoral card is 40 cents. However, the new one will cost one US dollar. Currently, STAE registers 829,236 voters, so the secretariat will allocate one million US dollars for the implementation of the biometric electronic card”, said the Director-General of STAE in the building of the Ministry of State Administration (MAE), in Caicoli.
The official also said that this amount is only used to finance the transition from the current card to the biometric card and does not include expenses related to other resources, such as equipment, operating costs, among others.
“This card may not be implemented yet in the next presidential elections, as the most appropriate database system has yet to be defined. However, it could be implemented in the next parliamentary elections. Even so, STAE continues to work to accelerate this work,” he said.
The Director-General of STAE recalled that the current electoral card is already electronic, but still does not fulfill all the requirements for voting without the use of voter lists.
“When the electronic biometric electoral card is implemented, it will no longer be necessary to list voters as in previous elections,” he said.
