DILI, 03 june 2021 (TATOLI) – The United Nation agrees with Timor Leste’s government appeals for the joint cooperation in response to the flood devastating victims on April 4, 2021.
Since the heavy rains on April 4 because of a cyclone formation over the Timorese Sea, causing flash floods and waterlogging in many areas in Timor-Leste also has affected normal life, including destroys thousand of houses, roads, bridges and killed 41 people.
The United Nations Residence Coordinator, Roy Trivedy said, the Timor-Leste government has set up $.65 million of contingency fund in solidarity with the Government while USD 10.73 million emergency relief fund were provided by the humanitarian partners and the donors to respond to its recovery.
According to Mr. Trivedy the USD 10.73 million of emergency relief funds coming from New Zealand, the United Nations, Japan, Korea, China, Australian Aid, the Asian Development Bank, the private sector, the Timorese community, and even other partners.
Despite the government and its partners has put together the fund to respond to the issue, but today the country needs additional fund available for the anticipation of emergency responses to be covered in one period until December 2021.
“The preliminary decision conducted by Timor-Leste government and supported by the United Nation and international humanitarian partners were addressed for 65.000 people under the risks of malnutrition and not able be accessing to the good health. This natural disaster happens while the country is faced a pandemic of covid-19.” Said Resident coordinator Trivedy
Timor Leste government cooperate with international partners and United Nation has officially launched the joint appeal for $32.7 million aims for the emergency response during the short term in particular to 65 thousand population in Timor Leste.
This is coming with an objective for recovery sustainable and joint appeal respond for the planning recovery for inundation and providing coordination from the international partner and Timor Leste government its self until December 2021.
Mr. Trivedy at the same time highlighted The nine (9) priority activities in the appeal to address critical gaps across nine(9) sectors: Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) and Emergency Shelter; Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH); Gender and Protection; Food Security; Nutrition; Health; Education; Early Recovery and Livelihoods; and, Emergency Logistics.
For the affected communities to be able to transition to recovery, he said, the residual humanitarian needs particularly of those who continue to be temporarily displaced and other vulnerable groups – need to be addressed as a matter of priority.
The united nation (UN) data showed that a total of 33,835 households and 193 victims have been affected by the floods across the country.
“The United Nation and other international organization are assisting to support Timor Leste government during the country encounter difficult situation,” he said.
The Join appeal is participated by The government through 14 ministries and 63 humanitarian partners and donors included 9 of the United Nation Agency.
