DILI, 21 june 2021 (TATOLI)- Former President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and Senior Diplomat, José Ramos Horta congratulates António Guterres on the re-election of Secretary General of the United Nations (UN).
Ramos sees that António Guterres has enormous potential for the UN Secretary General because he has demonstrated his abilities during his first term.
“Congratulations to Secretary General Antonio Guterres for having a second time so without campaigning, this, because his first term has showed his intelligence,” explained José Ramos Horta to Journalist of TATOLI News Agency in Farol, on monday.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner also explained that being Secretary General of UN is not an easy thing, because you have to build a good relations with all countries, such as America, China, India, Russia and the other countries in world.
“He was able to get support and this is the first time he gets unanimity,” Horta said.
Quoted from Reuters on june 18, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres was appointed to a second five-year term on friday by the 193-member UN General Assembly.
“I will give everything to ensure the growth of trust between big countries and small countries, to build bridges, and to relentlessly engage in building trust,” Guterres told the General Assembly after taking the oath of office.
The 15-member Security Council earlier this month recommended the General Assembly to reappoint Guterres. His second term begins on January 1, 2022.
Guterres activated Ban Ki-moon in January 2017, and was previously Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and head of the United Nations refugee agency from 2005 to 2015. Secretary-General, he has been a cheerleader for climate action, a COVID-19 vaccine for all, and digital collaboration.
When he took the reins as UN Secretary-General, the world body struggled to contain the war and deal with humanitarian issues in Syria and Yemen. The conflicts remain unresolved, and Guterres also now faces a State of Emergency in Myanmar and the Tigray region of Ethiopia.
