DILI, 25 june 2021 (TATOLI)- Biodiversity law from article 30 and has been strengthened by the Timor-Leste penal code article 215-201 prohibits people to destroy the environment and articles 227 -228 concerning the right to environmental destruction will be subject to sanctions, announced National Director of Biodiversity Rui dos Reis Pires
“Those who kill wild animals, burn forests, and cut trees indiscriminately will be subject to a penalty of $5.000-10.000 for individuals and $50.000 for collectivities or companies, if these are not complied with, they will be sentenced during 3-5 years in prison,” said Rui to Journalist of TATOLI News Agency in Mandirin Dili, on friday.
Rui explained that the Law of Biodiversity is very important because so far there have been many arbitrarily burning forests.
Previously, around 60 hectares of coffee land had been burned by unknown people in Liquiça and Ermera Districts in 2019.
Therefore in the future the law of biodiversity will be implemented to teach the people of Timor-Leste to be aware because if we burn nature the effect will cause a long drought, floods, many animals die because there are no plants to eat and also many water wells are dry due to burning forests and chop wood carelessly.
However, biodiversity is under the umbrella of the Secretary of State for Environmental Affairs.
