Speech Competition important for nurturing youth public speaking skills

DILI, 15 july 2021 (TATOLI) – Girls Alliance organizes a one-day Youth Speech Competition to improve youth public speaking and leadership skills.

Twenty young contestants from ten youth movement groups in Dili were competing in the speech competition with the titles: ‘The Spirit of Nationalism and Patriotism of Millennium Youths on National Development’ and ‘Role of Youths on National Development’.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the speech competition, Girls Alliance Officer Timor-Leste, Odelia da Luz Vargas said that the competition was important to enhance the public speaking skills of the young people through delivering their thoughts on the selected topics.

“This is a brilliant opportunity for these 20 young people to elaborate their ideas and critical thoughts based on the topics. In addition, it also enhances their confidence when speaking in public,” said Vargas in Tower-Center hall, in Fatuhada, Dili, today.

Vargas said more young girls took part in the speech competition: “In this competition, girls are slightly outnumbering boys. It shows that girls are moving forward we will continue promoting these girls.”

At the same place, the President of the Organizing Committee for the commemoration of the third anniversary of the Girls Alliance, Fidelio Mesquita Soares said that the competition was important to promote gender equality by encouraging young girls to participate in the competition.

“Through such competition, we promote our young talented boys and girls and preventing and combating violence against women and girls in the country. This competition also important for these young talented people to share and contribute their ideas and thoughts on the national development,” said Soares.

Soares said delivering speeches in public is not an easy task, saying it needs appropriate planning, elaborating the ideas, and confidence.

Ronaldo Ima Dias do Rego, one of the contestants from INFINITU team said that the youth speech competition giving opportunities for young people to unleash their potential and bringing out the best in them: “It is a good process for the young people to develop and prepare themselves to be the future leaders of the nation.”

In addition, Catarina da Costa Araujo, a contestant from MAGIS TL urged young Timorese to be the agents in development processes.

“We need to develop ourselves to be well-educated persons, in order to develop our beloved nation,” added Araujo.
