DILI, 20 july 2021 (TATOLI)- The executive director of the Timor-Leste Disability Eyes Association (AHDMTL), Gaspar Afonso, appealed to everyone to respect all people with disabilities in Timor-Leste.

“I ask everyone not to underestimate us by calling us blind people, crooked legs, crooked hands, slanted eyes, hunchbacked, deaf and others but just call us with the terminology that has generally been used so far, namely People With Eyes Disabilities, People With Deaf Disabilities and People With Physical Disabilities,” said Afonso in his office Manleuana to Journalist of TATOLI News Agency on tuesday.
Afonso explained to the public that we must respect each other by using polite words to people with disabilities to take care of each other’s feelings otherwise people with disabilities will be embarrassed in front of the public because the words we speak are very rude and offend people with disabilities and automatically people with disabilities will be cornered and discriminated against from the public, said Afonso.
Therefore, AHDMTL plans to socialize the terminology of words used in calling people with disabilities in all schools throughout the territory of Timor-Leste and will also inform this terminology through the mass media and posters so that the public can call us with the existing terminology of people with disabilities, specifically in schools because many people with disabilities study in schools in Timor-Leste on generally.
