CSDS and SC agree to extend the state of emergency to tackle the new virus

DILI, July 27, 2021 (TATOLI) – The Superior Council for Defense and Security (SCDS) and the State Council (SC), today recommended to the President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres Lú Olo, to deliver a letter to the National Parliament aims of approving the 16th of the declaration of the state of emergency, to prevent the Delta variant in Timor-Leste.

“During the meeting, The superior Council of Defense and Security (SCDS) and the State Council (SC) has discussed the proposal for the extension and imposing of the emergency restriction with the Government and recommended to Lu Olo to submit the recommendation letter to the National Parliament to be considered,” The President’s Spokesperson Francisco Vasconcelhos made a comment at the Presidential Palace, Aitarak Laran Dili.

Mr. Vasconcelhos said the extension for the State of Emergency is because of the number of new viruses (Delta Variant) is continued to increase in West Timor, Indonesia.

Vasconcelos added that the President of the Republic will declare the 16th State of Emergency after the parliament approves the proposal for the renewal of the SoE.

It is recalled that the Government proposed, on July 21, to the President of the Republic, the renewal of the state of emergency, for another thirty days, after analyzing the presence of the national epidemiological situation, by the Situation Room of the Integrated Center of Crisis Management (CIGC).

The country is in the 15th state of emergency, which began at 00:00 on July 2, 2021, and ended at 23:59 on July 31, 2021.

The country has been in a state of emergency since March 2020, after the Ministry has detected the first case of covid-19 in Timor-Leste.
