Each year 10.000 of forests in TL are degraded

DILI, 25 august 2021 (TATOLI)— The General Director of Forests, from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery (MAF), Raimundo Mau, said, each year 10.000 acres of forests in Timor-Leste are destroyed or degraded by fire and lost to logging and agriculture combined.

“The degraded forests generated by human activities such as burning the forests, and deforestation that caused 10.000 of forests destroyed every year,” Director, Raimundo Mau informed Tatoli in his office MAF Comoro.

According to Mau, forest degradation often takes place in every municipality and it has widely occurred in Dili.

“The Degradation has mostly occurred in the places where there is a large population, for example, Dili, however in other municipalities mostly the trees are used by the population for their everyday activity, cooking and other households’ activities,” he explained.

Following the record from MAF, Timor-Leste accommodates 1.160.214 hectares of forests areas with 77,78% total of land areas, which the Government has promised to use 745.145 (51%) for the human intervention.

However, in 2003-2021 the Forests areas begin to reduce from 1.053.000 hectares to 869.000 hectares.
