Portugal delivers another batch of 130,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to TL

DILI, 07 september 2021 (TATOLI) – The Portuguese Government provides another batch of 130,000 doses of the Covid-19 AstraZeneca vaccine to Timor-Leste to combat the pandemic.

“Apart from the vaccines, essential medical items were included to carry out the administration of the vaccine. These essential medical items will be handed over to the Timor-Lester’s health authorities by the Portuguese Embassy in Dili to assist the government’s campaign plan against covid-19,” said in a statement.

The statement recalled that the Portuguese Government had already supported Timor-Leste with 12.000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine on july 20, 2021.

“Supporting these vaccines to Timor-Leste is part of the Portuguese Government’s commitment to ensure at least 5 percent of the vaccines available in Timor-Leste and other Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) were purchased by the Portuguese government. It is to reinforce the commitment that was made by the Portuguese government during the CPLP Summit in Luanda, last july”, said the statement.

According to the document, the support was realized due to the joint efforts made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Camões Institute for Cooperation and Language, the Embassy of Portugal in Dili, the Ministry of Health, through the General Directorate of Health (DGS), the National Authority of Medicines and Health Products, I.P. (INFARMED) and the Working Group of the National Vaccination Plan against Covid-19 in Portugal.

The statement said that Timor-Leste has already received about one million doses of vaccines offered by the COVAX Facility, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Portugal.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MNEC), Adaljiza Magno said that Timor-Leste is satisfied with the support given by the Portuguese Government.

“This support will increase the vaccination rate of the population in Timor-Leste,” she said.

There has been a total of 17.888 lab-confirmed cases of the virus in Timor-Leste, with 13.863 recoveries, active cases were 3.941, and 85 deaths, according to SIJK’s data.

In Timor-Leste, of the 754.864 eligible groups, 52.7 percent had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, of which 28.3 percent have also received their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
