DILI, 09 september 2021 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste supports all efforts of conflict resolution, reconciliation, and peacebuilding in Afghanistan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MNEK), Adaljiza Albertina Xavier Reis Magno has said.
“TL will support the conflict resolution in Afghanistan. The Representative of Timor-Leste to the United Nations will vote to support the peacebuilding and reconciliation to end the conflict in Afghanistan,” Magno told reporters at the Ministry of Finance, in Dili, yesterday.
She added, although TL is a small country, it will always support and encourage Afghanistan to be able to resolve the conflict as both Afghanistan and TL are part of the g7+ group, where the Deputy Secretary is an Afghan.
Last month (31/8), the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres urged all nations across the world to provide timely and flexible funding to support the people of Afghanistan in the ‘Darkest Hour of Need’, saying almost half the population needs humanitarian assistance to survive and the country faces the threat of basic services collapsing completely.
Earlier this month, Guterres urged international support to prevent ‘Humanitarian Catastrophe’ in Afghanistan.
“I urge all member states to dig deep for the people of Afghanistan in their darkest hour of need,” Guterres’ statement cited in Gandahara-News.
He offered some grim statistics of the looming “humanitarian catastrophe”: 18 million Afghans need aid to survive, one in three don’t know where their next meal will come from, over half of all children under age 5 are expected to become “acutely malnourished” in the next year, and every day people are losing access to basic goods and services.
