DILI, 23 september 2021 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) would participate in the UN High-Level Dialogue on Energy to share Timor-Leste’s progress in providing electricity to its population.
The High-Level Dialogue would take place in New York, on september 24, 2021.
“We have delivered a video to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MoFAC), to be played during the UN High-Level Dialogue on Energy. I was informed by the Representative of Timor-Leste to the United Nations that the video would be played during the dialogue. Through this video we will share the success that Timor-Leste had made so far in providing electricity access to the majority of the population across the country,” Minister of Public Works, Salvador Soares dos Reis Pires told reporters at the Palace of the Government, in Dili, on wednesday.
“Through the video, we will present to the world the success that we have achieved so far. Such as close to 85 percent of the Timorese population across the country have access to electricity. Hoping that by the end of 2023, we could conclude the installation of the electricity to all villages across the territory.”
He said another success was transforming the Public Electricity into Public Electricity Company of Timor-Leste, E.P. (EDTL).
Pires said due to Covid-19, Timor-Leste would take part in the UN High-Level Dialogue on Energy via virtual.
The dialogue would raise ambition and accelerate action towards the achievement of the SDG7 energy targets by catalyzing innovative solutions, investments, and multi-stakeholder partnerships in support of the Decade of Action to deliver the SDGs and accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change, said on the website of Sustainable Energy For All.
The opening of the High-level Dialogue on Energy will begin with the remarks of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, President of the UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid, and business and youth leaders.
