DILI, 04 october 2021 (TATOLI) – The Secretary of State for Civil Protection (SEPS), Joaquim José Gusmão dos Reis Martins informed that three telecom operators, namely Timor-Telecom, Telenor, and Telkomsel would disseminate extreme weather information to alert communities, to take the precautionary measures.
“SEPS had signed an agreement with the three telecom operators to provide weather extreme alerts to communities. Next week, they will start delivering the weather fact and information to the clients,” Martins told reporters after meeting Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak, in Dili, today.
He said SEPS will continue working with the National Directorate of Meteorology of Timor-Leste (DNMTL) on extreme weather conditions to alert the communities across the country through early warning alert messages.
Early warning alert messages are important for the communities to take important precautions to deal with any kind of extreme weather like the april-4 flash flood, which claimed 34 lives, and left many homeless after 4.231 houses were destroyed, while 14 are still missing.
Of the 30.322 flood-affected families, 24.816 families are from Capital Dili.
Martins said 731 people who left homeless after their houses were destroyed during the april-4 flash flood are currently living in several refugee centers, including Dom Bosco, Manleuana, Hera, Metiaut, etc.
