Funeral service for Max Stahl to be held in Brisbane

DILI, 9 november 2021 (TATOLI) – The funeral service for Max Stahl will be held in Brisbane on Friday 12 November, at 10 am Brisbane time.

“The 30th anniversary of the Santa Cruz Massacre in Dili, we will celebrate the funeral mass honoring the life, death, and eternal life of Timor-Leste’s true hero, Max Stahl, at St Stephens Cathedral, Elizabeth St Brisbane, remembering also the brave Timorese youth who died or were wounded in their struggle for freedom,” said Judy Attwood Queensland Timor Sea Justice Group.

Max Stahl demonstrated the highest order of courage in filming and sharing his footage and images about the atrocities, especially in 1999, with the world, forcing it to respond.

The mass will be live screened worldwide on the Brisbane Archdiocesan website.

Since 2003 Max Stahl and his wife Ingrid have based themselves in Timor-Leste, where Max has founded the CAMS Timor-Leste, the Max Stahl Audiovisual center for Timor-Leste.

Max Stahl was born on 6 December 1954 in the United Kingdom. He passed away on October 28, 2021, at around 4.30 am Brisbane local time.

In 1991 Max Stahl arrived in East Timor (Timor-Leste) where he lived and documented one of the most dramatic moments of the country: the massacre in the Santa Cruz cemetery, in Dili. The images of the massacre were spread around the world and changed forever the history of the nation.

In Timor-Leste, the Director of the 12th November Committee, Gregorio Saldanha called all entities to honor and value the contribution of the young people during the 24-year resistance for Timor-Leste’s self-determination amid Timor-Leste’s preparation for the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Santa Cruz Massacre.
