DILI, 26 November 2021 (TATOLI) – The leader of the negotiation team for the accession of Timor-Leste to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the current Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs (MCAE), Joaquim Amaral, traveled today to the Switzerland in order to participate in the high level meeting on country membership of this organization.
According to the government’s press release said that the minister will participate in the 10th Round Table of China, from November 28th to 29th, and in the 12th Ministerial Conference of the WTO, to take place between November 30th and December 3rd.
The first meeting intends to assess the impact of the adhesion reform based on the environmental business and interaction with regional and global markets. Timor-Leste has the opportunity to present those faced in the sense of surpassing them.
“The former Timorese intern from the internship program for China’s accession to the WTO, and current MCAE economic adviser, Maria Martins Da Silva, will make an intervention, in the second session, on the five pillars of the China Conquest Program Opportunities,” referred to the document that Tatoli had access to today.
According to the document, Joaquim Amaral and his delegation will also participate in the high-level Round-table, organized by the Reinforced Integrated Framework (RIF), under the theme “Support for the Future of Least Developed Countries (PMD’s), with Timor-Leste already relies on the assistance of this framework for economic diversification, such as the expansion and export of non-oil products in order to better participate in the global economy.
The minister will present, at the high-level meeting, on November 29, the graduation review process and will participate in the opening of the 12th Ministerial Conference.
“This Conference is the highest decision-making body for the WTO and has been held every two years since 1996. “During the period of the conference, the ministers of the member countries will have the opportunity to present declarations on the functioning of the multilateral service trade of the WTO,” he adds.
During the visit, the government official will also hold a meeting with the Director General of the World Intellectual Priority Organization (WIPO) to discuss the country’s plans to meet the requirements of this organization. The Timorese delegation will meet with other teams from member countries of the g7+, also in the process of joining the WTO.
The Representative of the Permanent Mission of Timor-Leste in Geneva, Ambassador Lurdes Bessa, will hear the current status of these countries’ preparation for membership.
