DILI, 30 november 2021 (TATOLI) – President of Commission F, which deals with issues of health, social security, and gender equality, Noé da Silva Ximenes “Buka Tuir”, highlighted that Timor-Leste will ratify, next year, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities ( CRPD).

Noé da Silva Ximenes “Buka Tuir” highlighted his statement this Tuesday after participating in a seminar on the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities, in Kota 8, in Manleuana, Dili.

“The ratification of the convention is the exclusive task of the Government of Timor-Leste, in particular the Ministry of Solidarity and Social Inclusion (MSSI). We were unable to ratify last year due to budget shortfalls, but we estimate US$44,219 million in the 2022 State Budget”.

The Executive Director of the Timor-Leste Association of Persons with Disabilities (ADTL), Cesário da Silva, hopes that the Timor-Leste Executive can ratify the convention to establish the State’s specific obligations in protecting the rights of persons with disabilities in this country.

“We hope that next year, the Government and the State of Timor-Leste can ratify the convention because it is necessary to protect persons with disabilities from discrimination and ensure equal access to public services in this country,” he stressed.

It must be remembered that the Timor-Leste Constitution expressly provides for non-discrimination and equal treatment for persons with mental or physical disabilities.

In addition, the Criminal Code classifies the ill-treatment of persons with disabilities by cleaning staff as a crime punishable by up to six years in prison.
