Preparations underway for construction of INTERFET Memorial in Dili

DILI, 11 June 2026 (TATOLI) – The Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Agio Pereira, met on June 8, 2026 with Ambassadors Nelson Santos and Vicky Tchong, from the International Relations Service of the Presidency of the Republic, to discuss the preparatory work for the construction of the INTERFET Memorial.

The meeting was also attended by senior officials and technical staff from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

During the meeting, they discussed matters relating to institutional coordination, as well as the main elements of the project and the next stages in the design and implementation process of the INTERFET Memorial.

The memorial will be built on the site of the former heliport used by INTERFET, adjacent to the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace in Dili.

Launched in September 2024, as part of the commemorations marking the 25th anniversary of the deployment of the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET), the project aims to preserve the memory of the international mission that contributed to the restoration of peace and stability in the country following the 1999 Popular Consultation.

At the launch ceremony, Minister Agio Pereira highlighted the historic importance  of this project, saying that “this memorial will be a lasting symbol of bravery, solidarity and hope.

He said the memorial is not only a tribute to the past but also a beacon of inspiration for future generations.
