Dili, 1 december 2021 (TATOLI) – Pope Francis sent a message of congratulation to the President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres Lú Olo, to congratulate the Timorese people on the commemoration of the 46th anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence Day.
The 46th anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence Day was commemorated in Baucau municipality.
“As part of the celebration of the day of Timor-Leste, I present to the President of the Republic and Timorese people, my cordial congratulations, and wishes for growing harmony, cooperation, and life force. I wish a peaceful future and joy for all Timorese,” Pope Francis said in a letter sent to Lu Olo.
The theme for the celebration of the 46th anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence was “Union and Fight Together for a Victory for All”.
The Vatican Apostolic Nuncio in Timor-Leste, Monsignor Marco Sprizzi said earlier that Pope intends and desires to visit the country if the epidemiological situation allows it.
The Pope, therefore, urged the entire population to take the Covid-19 vaccine so that sanitary conditions would allow gatherings during his visit.
Pope Francis decided to postpone his visit to Timor-Leste, which was scheduled to take place in september 2020. So, his trip to Timor-Leste depends on the evolution of the global pandemic.
Pope’s visit to Timor-Leste will be part of a program of his trips to Asia, including countries such as Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
