DILI, 09 february 2022 (TATOLI) – The Secretary of State for the Environment (SEA), through the National Waste Management Directorate (NWMD) has purchased a Medical Waste Shredder to recycle and destroy the hazardous and toxic (B3) medical waste in the country.
AMKTL, Hatutan, Permatil, and Hasatil consortium won the Government’s tender for the acquisition of the Medical Waste Shredder.
The Director of NWMD, Nelson Madeira said that the purchase of the Medical Waste Shredder cost around US$70.000.
“This Medical Waste Shredder would arrive in the country this month,” Nelson told TATOLI at his office, in Dili, on wednesday.
The acquisition of Hazardous and Medical Waste Shredder began in 2021, aiming to manage and control hazardous and medical waste in the country, particularly the medical waste from the response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Medical waste from the response to the COVID-19 pandemic has put tremendous strain on health care waste management systems around the world, threatening human and environmental health and exposing a dire need to improve waste management practices, according to a new WHO report.
