2022 Presidential Election: STAE registers more than 850.000 voters
DILI, 18 february 2022 (TATOLI) – The Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) has officially registered 859.613 eligible voters, consisting of national and Timorese voters residing overseas.
Of the 859.613 voters, 852.500 were registered nationally and 7.113 overseas.
These 859.613 voters were eligible to participate in the march 19 presidential election.
Of the 852.500 national voters, 33.603 were recorded in Aileu, 45.833 in Ainaro, 96.207 in Baucau, 70.283 in Bobonaro, 47.807 in Covalima, 190.710 in Dili, 82.714 in Ermera, 48.012 in Lautem, 50.987 in Liquiça, 35.603 in Manatuto, 40.825 in Manufahi, 51.495 in RAEOA, and 58.421 in Viqueque municipality.
On the other hand, of the 7.113 Timorese voters residing overseas, 1.487 were recorded in Australia, 1.277 in South Korea, 2.229 in the United Kingdom, 1.264 in Northern Ireland, and 856 in Portugal.
The Director-General of STAE, Acilino Branco, said that the voter registration, both nationally and abroad, took place between june 1, 2021, and january 14 this year.
“From february 1 to 8, STAE carried out the verification process of the electoral cards of the voters who have died and those who are still under 17 years,” Branco said during a presentation on the electoral process at STAE’s office, in Dili, on thursday.
During the presentation, STAE has officially announced the 1.200 voting centers, of which 1.911 were installed in the national territory and nine overseas.
“Three voting centers have been set in Australia, including one in Darwin, one in Sydney, and another one in Melbourne, while in South Korea, voters will be able to cast their vote in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Portugal will have two voting centers, one in Lisbon and another one in Porto. In the United Kindom, two voting centers would be established as well, such as one in London, another one in Oxford. Meanwhile, one voting center would be established in Belfast of Northern Ireland,” he said.
