DILI, 21 february 2022 (TATOLI)- The President of the National Electoral Commission (CNE) José Belo, informed that the Presidential Candidate Debate will be held on 08 march by using two official languages ​​based on the article 13 of the Constitution of   Democratic Republic of Timor – Leste.

“The Presidential Debate will take place on march 08,  the candidates can answer the  questions by using Tetum and Portuguese language based on article 13 of the constitution of the Democratic Republic of Timor–Leste, We hope that with the two languages ​​is used, the  electors, can understand it well to vote the presidential candidates according to the elector’s  preferences to build Timor -Leste which better  in the future,” the President of CNE José Belo told Tatoli at the Presidential’s office Aitarak laran on monday.

The President of CNE Belo, added that the grid of questions for the debate on the President of the Republic has been prepared by the CNE together with academics and relevant institutions, the sixteen candidates will debate for 4 hours in accordance with their vision and mission to convince the electors to vote a candidate to become the President of the Republic for all Timorese people.

Remember that, the Presidential Election will be held on march 19, 2022 and the elected President of the Republic will be sworn in on may 20 as the President of the Republic officially for a period of five years starting from 2022-2027.

Meanwhile, the article of the Constitution of the Republic of Timor-Leste that addresses the official language is article 13 (Official languages ​​and national languages)

  1. Tetum and Portuguese are the official languages ​​of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.
  2. Tetum and other national languages ​​are valued and developed by the State.
