DILI, 08 march 2022 (TATOLI)- The Secretary-General of United Nations (United Nations), António Guterres on International Women’s Day (IWD – International Women’s Day) 2022 declared that it is women’s ideas, innovations, and activism that are changing the world for the better.

“On International Women’s Day, we celebrate women’s and girls’ day everywhere. We celebrate their contribution to ending the COVID-19 pandemic. Their ideas, innovations, and activism that change our world for the better and their leadership in all walks of life,” said the UN Secretary-General in a press release accessed by Tatoli today.

According to her, the UN is also aware that in many areas, the clock for women’s rights is moving backward. The pandemic has driven girls and women out of school and the workplace. They face increasing poverty and increasing violence.

“They do most of the world’s unpaid but essential care work. They are subjected to violence and harassment, simply because of their gender,” he said.

In all countries, women are scandalously underrepresented in the power and business boardrooms and as this year’s theme reminds us, they are bearing the brunt of climate change and environmental degradation.

From now on, on International Women’s Day, it’s time to turn the clock forward for every woman and girl. By ensuring a quality education for every girl, so that they can build the life they want and help make the world a better place for all of us.

Through massive investments on women’s training and decent work. The effective action to end gender based violence. Through bold actions is to protect our planet.

Through universal care that is fully integrated into the social protection system. And through targeted measures such as gender quotas so that everyone can benefit from women’s ideas, experiences and leadership wherever decisions are made.

Gender inequality is fundamentally a power issue, in a male-dominated world and male-dominated culture. Power relations must be reversed.

“At the United Nations, we have achieved gender equality in senior management at headquarters and around the world — enhancing our work and better representing the communities we serve,” said the UN Secretary-General.

The UN needs more environment ministers, business leaders, and female presidents and prime ministers. They can encourage countries to tackle the climate crisis, develop green jobs and build a more just and sustainable world.

“We cannot come out of a pandemic with the clock rolling backwards on gender equality. We need to turn the clock forward for women’s rights. Now is the time,” he concluded.
