DILI, 21 march 2022 (TATOLI) – The European Union (EU) and Election Observation Mission (MOE) is certain to continue to provide the observation service for the second process of the presidential election if there is a possibility of it happening in Timor-Leste.

The EU Ambassador, Andrew Jacobs stated to the Tatoli Agency today at the Timor Hotel, the MOE-EU will remain in the TL, if the Court of Appeal (TR) decides to hold the second round of presidential elections in the TL.

“I can’t give any information because it’s still in process but if there is a second round, we will continue, the MOE-EU team will stay in the TL, there will be recommendations for this presidential election,” explained Andrew Jacobs to Tatoli.

He guaranteed that the EU would prepare a new project to support the electoral capacity to be carried out in Timor-Leste in the future. “We have the intention to prepare a different project to support the capacity in the electoral field,” he said.

The MOE-EU is led by the Chief Observer, Domènec Ruiz Devessa, a member of the European Parliament, and consists of a core team of eight election analysts, who arrived in Dili in mid-february.

The mission also has 26 long-term observers from 17 different EU member states that were deployed across the country on 25 february.

EU observers follow all phases of the electoral process including the campaign period, voting, counting, and possible electoral disputes.

The mission will conduct comprehensive monitoring of traditional media and social networks. Several short term Observers recruited locally will strengthen the mission on Election Day and about 50 Timorese support the mission’s work. MOE-UE is in TL until the end of the selection process.
