DILI, 02 april 2022 (TATOLI) – Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Dili, Dom Virgílio do Carmo da Silva, asks candidates to avoid insults in the second round of presidential elections.

“I ask candidates to create an environment of peace for the people during the campaign period. Also avoid using profanity that offend and influence the people, as we are [almost] in Holy Week”, said the Archbishop, on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Nossa Senhora de Lourdes Cave, at the University of Dili.

Dom Virgílio do Carmo also appeals to voters to choose a good President for the country.

Asked about the campaign taking place during the Easter period, the Archbishop recalled that the Archdiocese sent a letter to the President and Prime Minister, the National Election Commission and the Court of Appeal to consider changes to the calendar.

“However, we received the answer that the planned timetable is based on the electoral law. Heads of State and Government cannot make changes,” he said.

The electoral campaign will take place between april 2nd and 16th, with the second round of elections scheduled for the 19th of this month.

The President of the Court of Appeal, Deolindo dos Santos, announced, on March 29, the candidates who will advance to the second round – José Ramos Horta and Francisco Guterres ‘Lú Olo’.
