DILI,04 april 2022 (TATOLI) –The European Union project PROCULTURA PALOP-TL held, on 02 of april, the closing ceremony and delivery of certificates within the scope of the creative writing workshop: “Building narratives for children and young people in Timor-Leste,’’.
Based on the press release which TATOLI accessed today,this workshop, aimed at 25 young aspiring writers, aimed to train children and young people in literary writing. At the end of this training, each of the participants will write a children’s story. The five best short stories produced in class will be chosen for editing and publication.
In the speech of Manuela Bairos, the Ambassador of Portugal in Dili, “learning is not a simple process, it requires effort and dedication. May the new knowledge acquired through this creative writing workshop be the starting point in conquering a promising future for these 25 participants and writers in Portuguese.”
Mário Machado, representing the EU Delegation in Timor-Leste, said that “for authors and teachers, the construction of narratives, stories and books are fundamental factors for increasing academic competitiveness, literacy and a manifestation of citizenship.
For that reason, the EU is proud to support PROCULTURA in actions aimed at providing a better future for teachers and children in Timor-Leste.”

This workshop had the experience of the trainer and writer Miguel Gullander, PhD in Linguistics, Languages and Literatures and Master in Pedagogy for Development, and with the participation of guest Timorese writer Céu Lopes, co-author of the book Constar stories with a grandmother in the lap, 2021, a work written by Portuguese-speaking authors launched in May of last year, on the occasion of the World Day of the Portuguese Language. After the 20 hours dedicated to this training, held at the Portuguese Cultural Center of the Embassy of Portugal in Dili, participants will be better able to write a space, a time and a narrative action typical of children’s imagination.
The creative writing workshop aims to reinforce opportunities for the creation and publication of children’s literature, adopting a perspective of a national and regional identity resource, a teaching-learning and creativity vector, and is part of the activities promoted by PROCULTURA Promotion of Employment in Income Generating Activities in the Cultural Sector, in the PALOP and in Timor-Leste.
PROCULTURA PALOP-TL is an action of the Multiannual Indicative Program PALOP – Timor-Leste and the European Union, financed by the European Union, co-financed and managed by Camões, I.P. and co-financed by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. It aims to contribute to job creation in income-generating activities in the cultural and creative economy in the PALOP and Timor-Leste.
