STAE thanks UNDP and Japan for their support of the elections in Timor–Leste

DILI, 14 april 2022 (TATOLI)-The Director of the Technical Secretariat of the Electoral Administration (STAE), Acilino Manuel Branco, expressed his gratitude to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Government of Japan through the Embassy in Timor – Leste for their support on materials, non material and logistics and other related support to success the 2022 presidential election.

“On behalf of the Government of Timor-Leste I thank all the support, both material and non-material, that has been supported by UNDP and the Government of Japan to conduct the presidential election with success, from the beginning of the first round of elections and the second round with the aim of achieving safe, freely, honest and transparent elections based on the democratization values which is ​​implemented in Timor-Leste,” the General Director of STAE, Acilino Manuel Branco told TATOLI at STAE’ office Caicoli, Dili on this thursday.

The General Director of STAE, Acilino Manuel Branco, hopes this collaboration and support will continue to support the parliamentary election and the Village Head Elections successfully which will be held in 2023 and 2024.

The Representative of UNDP Residence in Timor-Leste, Munkhtuya Altangerel stated: “The COVID – 19 pandemic continued to spread globally, and Timor – Leste is no exception. UNDP, with financial support of the Government of Japan, continues to contribute to ensuring the protection and health of citizens while guaranteeing the exercise of the right to vote in the second -round of the presidential election.”

On the other hand, Kazumi Yamada, the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in Timor – Leste States: “It’s a great pleasure to be a part of efforts to achieve inclusive and safe election in cooperation with STAE and UNDP by providing the PPEs. We hope they will be used widely and effectively to protect the voters as well as the voting station staff to realize free, fair and inclusive election and the Government of Japan will continua to support the further election Timor-Leste.”

The UNDP CORE -TL project is established with financial support from the Government of Japan with $4 million and financial contribution from Government of Japan and UNDP with $360 thousand. Through the strong partnership with the Government of Japan, the Government of Timor-Leste, CNE and STAE, the CORE-TL project strives for COVID -Resilient, informed, and inclusive elections in Timor-Leste.
