The President of Portugal highlights the importance of cooperation with Timor-Leste

DILI, 19 may 2022 (TATOLI) – Portugal has collaborated with Timor-Leste in various fields, from education to diplomatic policy, from defense and security to justice and social support.

The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, told reporters upon his arrival at Timor-Leste’s Nicolau Lobato Airport to attend the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony and the 20th Anniversary of the Restoration of Independence Day.

President Rebelo also emphasized that the Vice-President of the Assembly of the Republic and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal were also present in the country to attend the event:”their presence showed that all Portuguese political forces and all Portuguese people are with Timor-Leste in these days,” He said.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also informed that Portugal intends to cooperate more with Timor-Leste and believes in the possibility of mobilizing investors for infrastructure, tourism, and other potential fields.

“Timor-Leste is an example in the region and the world, it is an example of peace, democracy, and freedom,”

“Timor-Leste “fills the whole soul of the world with love, recognition, gratitude, admiration, and tenderness” he added.

Mr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and his entourage arrived at Nicolau Lobato International Airport, at around 07.45 local times on the Portuguese passenger Air Euro Atlantic.

His team was greeted by the Deputy Prime Minister, José Reis.

Upon their arrival, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo immediately met with the Charismatic Leader of Timor-Leste, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão at the Timor Hotel.

President of the National Assembly of Mozambique, Delfim Santiago das Neves, Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau, Nuno Gomes Nabiam, Minister of the Environment and Biodiversity, Viriato Soares Cassama, Secretary of State for the Community of Guinea-Bissau, Salomé Santos Alouche, Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers Cabe Verde, Filomena Gonçalves, has also arrived in Timor-Leste.

The Presidential Inauguration Ceremony would take place in Tasi-Tolu, in Dili, on may 19. While the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the nation’s restoration independence day was set to take place at the Presidential Palace, on may 20
