Timorese athletes return home from Sea Games after winning 5 medals

DILI, 25 may 2022 (TATOLI) – Timorese athletes returned home from Sea Games after winning five medals (3 silver and 2 bronze medals) in three different sports – Athletics, Boxing, and Taekwondo.

The Timorese athletes were given a warm welcome as they returned home after winning a total of the five medals for the nation in the Sea Games 2022.

Several government members and family members were proudly welcoming the athletes at the airport to show their appreciation.

The athletes arrived at the Nicolau Lobato International Airport at around 11 am local time on the Indonesian Citilink passenger carrier.

Deputy Minister of Education, Youth, and Sports (MEJD), António Guterres, expressed his gratitude for the efforts made by the 13 athletes to gain such excellent results in the SEA Games competition.

Timor-Leste’s team of 38 people was made up of 25 members of the football team and 13 athletes.

Timorese runner Felisberto de Deus won two silver medals in the 5-mile and 10-mile marathons respectively. Meanwhile, Timorese boxer Delio Anzaqeci Mouzinho won a silver medal as well. In addition, José da Silva, a Timorese boxer also won a bronze medal and Santina Fernandes one bronze medal in Taekwondo.

Felisberto de Deus appreciated every support and prayer that came from the Timorese people in helping him to win the two silver medals.

“I feel proud to represent the Timorese people at the Sea Games competition,” said De Deus.

At the airport, Delio Anzaqeci Mouzinho also expressed his gratitude after holding back tears.

He promised to keep trying and train harder to win a gold medal in the next competition: “I will train hard to achieve my dream of becoming a champion one day,” he said.

The President of Timor-Leste’s Sports Confederation (CDTL), Macario Sanches congratulated the athletes for trying their best to win the five medals.

The Government of Timor-Leste is set to interact with the athletes on a ceremony of felicitation dinner to be held on may 27.
