DILI, 16 september 2022 ( TATOLI) – National Department of the Environment under the Secretary of State for Environmental, commemorates the 35th anniversary of world Ozone day in Timor – Leste.

Director of Climate Change, Agosto M Pinto, said Timor – Leste has ratified the United Nation climate change convention since 2009, saying, therefore, Timor – Leste along with other countries today celebrate the 35th anniversary of World Ozone day with the general theme: “Global Cooperation Protection Life on Earth”.

“Today the whole world commemorate 35th anniversary of World ozone Day, including Timor – Leste by working with the partners to protect and preserve our environment by reducing the activities that affect climate change and the ozone layer,” National Director of Climate Change, Pinto told reporters in Timor Plaza, Suai room, Dili on friday.

Pinto said, to ensure the protection of the ozone layer, the National Directorate for the Environment will cooperate with immigration authorities and companies that, import gas, air conditioning, refrigerators, and other chemical goods from neighboring countries to control the volume of chemicals before the transactions, to reduce the emissions of gas in Timor – Leste.

“We all must be united to protect our ozone layer by refreshing our daily lives and also for the next generation of Timor – Leste,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, General Director of Environment, Joao Carlos Soares, said Timor-Leste implemented the Montreal Protocol in order, to reduce the tropical world, saying therefore with the celebration of the 35th anniversary of World Ozone, SEA-DNE urges everyone to maintain a normal temperature to prevent the alteration of climate change in the world.

“With the celebration of World Ozone Day 2022, we will cooperate with all entities in Timor – Leste, to reduce the ozone layer to acquire more fresh air and ensure the proper life which not emerge the alteration of climate change in the world,” he concluded.

The Secretary General of the United Nation, Antonio Guterres addressed the World Ozone layer by praising the Montreal Protocol’s success in protecting the stratospheric ozone layer against synthetic chemicals that also cause climate heating: “Thanks to a global agreement, humanity has averted a major health catastrophe due to ultraviolet radiation pouring through a massive hole in the ozone layer,”

“The Montreal Protocol is a success because, when scientists discovered the threat we all faced, governments and their partners acted. We adopted a global environmental agreement that has been universally ratified and decisively implemented,” said Guterres.

The Montreal Protocol is a powerful example of multilateralism in action. The many problems facing the world – from conflicts to growing poverty, deepening inequality, and the climate emergency – it is a reminders that we can succeed in working together for the common good.

The Montreal Protocol has already contributed to tackling the climate crisis. By protecting plants from ultraviolet radiation, allowing them to live and store carbon, it has avoided up to an extra 1 degree Celsius of global warming. The Protocol’s work to phase out climate-heating gases and improve energy efficiency through its Kigali Amendment can further slow climate disruption.

“But, only by mirroring the cooperation and speedy action of the Montreal Protocol elsewhere can we stop the carbon pollution that is dangerously heating our world. We have a choice: collective action or collective suicide,” he said.

At the same time, Guterres calls on everyone to emulate the cooperation shown by the Montreal protocol to end the climate crisis.

“On this International Day, let us pledge to emulate the cooperation shown by the Montreal Protocol to end the climate crisis and all our common challenges. And let us continue to back the Montreal Protocol’s essential work,” he said.
