DILI, 05 october 2022 (TATOLI) – Secretary of State for the Environment, Demétrio do Amaral de Carvalho invited the President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta to attend the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), to be held from 6 – 18 november 2022, in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

“Today, we had a meeting with President Horta intending to invite him to attend the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference, which will be held in Egypt, next month,” Carvalho said after meeting President Horta at Presidential Palace, in Dili, today.

He said as a Nobel Peace Prize winner, President Horta plays a crucial role in the climate change campaigns.

Carvalho praised and thanked President Horta for his remarks on climate change at the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 77), in New York, last month.

“We hope that the Head of State will be available to attend the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP27), in Sharm El-Sheikh,” he hoped.

In addition, Carvalho also requested President Horta to discuss with his Indonesian counterpart to establish a nature-based peace park, which will allow both Timor-Leste and West Timor to ensure sustainable use of ocean and marine resources.

“Timor-Leste is surrounded by a number of Indonesian islands (Alor, Wetar, and Kisar). Therefore, the establishment of the nature-based peace park will ensure the sustainable use of ocean and marine resources between the two countries,” he explained.

During the meeting, President Horta said he has good relations and communication with the Indonesian Minister for Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the governor of East Nusa Tenggara (West Timor), Viktor Bungtilu Laiskodat, and President Joko Widodo.

“Therefore, there will be a discussion between Timor-Leste and Indonesia to see the possibilities for the establishment of the nature-based peace park in the future,” Carvalho concluded.
