DILI, 10 october 2022 (TATOLI) – The Director-General of Statistics of the Ministry of Finance, Elias dos Santos, revealed that 1.2 million inhabitants have already participated in the 2022 population census.
“We are currently registering 235.599 household data across the territory. So, we have already collected information on 1.2 million people, 657.037 of whom are men and 633.021 are women,” Santos told Tatoli, at his office, in Dili, on friday.
He said therefore the majority of respondents (98.8%), have participated in the census.
Santos said, in Capital Dili, enumerators faced challenges as many people are not at home during working hours, making it difficult for the team to collect the data.
Santos explained that the technical team will discuss the extension of the data collection time for those municipalities where data collection has not yet been finalized.
He said the contracts of the enumerators and supervisors ended on friday, but the contracts of the coordinators and statistic secretariat of the 2022 census will continue until next month.
In august 15, Timor-Leste launched its one-month census for the collection of household data across 452 villages in the country.
The Government of Timor-Leste allocated US$3.1 million of the General State Budget for the operation of the 2022 census.
In addition, the UN Agencies in Timor-Leste also supported the operation of the census with nearly US$1 million.
Around 3424 temporary workers were recruited of which around 3000 were made up of enumerators and supervisors.
The 2015 Timor-Leste Population Census was conducted in July 2015. The total population at the time of the census was 1,167,242, a 9.46% increase from 2010.
