TILOFE highlights the Importance of water conservation in Timor-Leste

Dili, 14 October 2022 (TATOLI)- Non-Governmental Organization Timor-Leste organic Fertilize (TILOFE) highlighted the importance of water conservation in Timor-Leste to respond to Timorese community needs.

The Director of the Timor-Leste organic Fertilizer (TILOFE), Zaquel do Carmo observed the importance of water conservation in the country is very important to ensure sufficient water supplies to all communities.

The responsible mentioned the need to work and partner with the company Bee Timor-Leste (BTL) to guarantee the conservation of water on the slopes of the hills to ensure reforestation and water sources.

“We have to unite them to conserve water on the slopes of the mountains to guarantee food production in the country,” Carmo informed in line with the commemoration of World Food Day, which will only be celebrated on the 16th.

The official stressed that not all of the population has access to the water supply system, adding that the Agricultural Coalition Network is working to combat the problem.

Zaquel do Carmo added that BTL should control illegal drilling in the soil of Capital across the Dili town.

“The aggregates in Dili continue to drill into the ground to obtain water, these drillings could lead to flooding,” he added.

It is recalled that the Ministry of Public Works has allocated, not 2.5 million US dollars for the water conservation program.

The program aims to build infrastructures that retain water and, through them, prevent soil erosion and degradation, and flooding in the country.

This pilot project will benefit 600 communities from 18 villages, 18 villages, 16 in the capital, and two in the municipality of Aileu.
