UNFPA support the Ministry of Health to implement five Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care  Centers in five municipalities

The Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Timor-Leste, Pressia Arifin-Cabo

DILI, 06 december 2022 ( TATOLI)– The United Nations Population Fund ( UNFPA)will support the Ministry of Health ( MoH) to establish five Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care  Centers ( BEmONC) in five municipalities.

The five municipalities compose of Lautem, Mantuto, Aileu, Ainaro, and Ermera.

UNFPA Representative in Timor – Leste Pressia Arifin Cabo, said UNFPA through the Australian Government and the Ministry of Health had previously launched BEmONC in three respective municipalities in Likisa, Vikeke, and Manufahi.

” UNFPA is committed to launching another five BEmNOC Centers in Lospalos, Manatuto, Aileu, Ainaro, and Gleno,” UNFPA Representative Arifin Cabo told TATOLI at Nova Turismo Hotel, Lecidere on tuesday.

It was explained that each maternity home at the health center would receive $ 50,000 in funding which would be used for renovation, complete facilities, and equipment as well as training for health workers so they could apply BEmONC.

The Birthing house that has changed to BEmONC will apply seven function signs namely:

1. Management of oxytocin & parenteral bleeding stage III in pregnancy

2. Parenteral Administration of antibiotics

3. Management of severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia

4. Post-abortion care removes product conception using manual suction 

5. Manual removal of the placenta

6. Narrow pelvis of the placenta

7. Resusciatation for new borns.

“UNFPA will try to support other programs such as family planning and maintaining maternal and reproductive health,” she explained.

Based on the data from MoH, currently, the implementation of BEmONC is only in Likisa, Vikeke, and Manufahi, as well as the Timor – Leste National Hospital of Guido Valadares ( HNGV), Dili.

Meanwhile Timor – Leste still needs 25 BEmONC centers in all municipalities including Oeccuse Ambeno .
