UN appoints Olufunmilaya Alexander as UN Representative in Timor – Leste

DILI, 7 december 2022 ( TATOLI)- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Olufunmilayo Abosede Balogun-Alexander of Nigeria as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Timor-Leste replacing her predecessor Roy Trivedy the former UN-appointed in Timor-Leste. 

According to the Press release seen by TATOLI, explained that Ulufunmilayo Abosede is a Nigerian citizen who has more than 30 years of experience in working on leading humanitarian, peace, and development projects at a senior level within the United Nations and international non-governmental organizations.

Prior to her appointment as United Nations Resident Coordinator, Balogun-Alexander served as Head, of Humanitarian Normative and Coordination Action, United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women), where she led UN-Women’s global response to humanitarian crises and supported the UN-Women Country Office to strengthen gender mainstreaming in United Nations-led humanitarian coordinated responses in crisis-affected countries.

In her previous role, Nigeria supported several UN women’s offices to strengthen gender mainstreaming and lead the humanitarian response to crisis-affected countries.

Bologun Alexander serves as UN Women Representative in Ethiopia, Director of External Relation and Advocacy for the International Family Planning Federation for Africa, and Program Manager of the UN Development Fund for Women in Kenya.

Nigeria leads and supports cross-functional teams at various levels within a national context to achieve impact and outcomes, particularly in humanitarian relations, development, and peace.

 She led United Nations inter-agency coordination to coordinate joint assessments and develop and implement joint United Nations programs, including gender-based violence, governance, and protection from sexual exploitation and abuse.

She has coordinated national support and government priorities for development and social policy funding, including co-creating and driving solutions on contentious issues of gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and minority groups, among others, to ensure that no one is left behind in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.  

Ms. Balogun-Alexander has a master’s degree in gender and development from the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, United Kingdom, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Lagos, Nigeria.

The Former United Nations Representative in TL, Roy Trivedy ended his mission in october 2022.
