JDN access that people with disabilities often face varied problems

DILI, 14 december 2022 (TATOLI) – The Non-Governmental Organization, Youth for Development (JDN-Tetum) identified persons with disabilities often face various problems in their lives.

Jescia Nelinha da Silva Ximenes said that this problem was identified after discussions with 36 representatives of persons with disabilities from four organizations.

“In our discussions, we found that people with disabilities do not have access to inclusive education, public facilities, lack the courage to express themselves because of physical disable, and feel discriminated against,” Ximenes told Tatoli during the interview.

Ximenes gave an example, after identifying the problem, the organization carried out a campaign program to increase public awareness of discrimination against persons with disabilities in Timor-Leste.

“We conducted campaigns by distributing stickers and producing videos in the media to increase public awareness in fighting discrimination against persons with disabilities,”

At the same time, Ximenes suggested the Government provide access for persons with disabilities.

“We ask the government, especially the Ministry of Education, to provide facilities and opportunities for people with disabilities to get access to education,”
