DILI, 06 january 2022 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta urged the middle power countries – Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey, South Africa, and India to use “middle power diplomacy” to pursue multilateral solutions to end the Ukraine-Russia war.

Middle powers help maintain international order by building coalitions, serving as mediators and ‘go-betweens’, and through international conflict management and resolution activities such as UN peacekeeping.

Middle powers States have the tendency to guide diplomacy toward the preservation of international order and peace.

Horta said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine puts the global economy at risk: “The prolonged and intensified war has caused significantly greater economic damage around the world, including Timor-Leste.”

“I discussed with the new President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on finding ways to end the Ukraine-Russia war. I believe that President Lula, together with other leaders of middle power countries, can initiate a dialogue to end the war between these two Eastern European countries,” Horta said upon his return from Brazil, at Dili International Airport, today.

He said that the US and EU could not solve the war alone as they are involved in the conflict, saying, therefore, the role of middle-power countries is essential to resolve the conflict.

Horta said that it is difficult to find a solution to such a conflict, adding that he will continue to urge those middle-power countries to find a solution to the conflict.
