DILI, 02 february 2023 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste and the Rhode Island National Guard have signed an agreement on the State Partnership Program that will enhance professional development, training, and exchanges between the Rhode Island National Guard and the National Defense Force (F-FDTL).

The agreement was signed by Defense Minister Filomeno Paixao and the Major General of Rhode Island National Guard, Chris Callahan, accompanied by F-FDTL Major General Falur Rate Laek and Admiral Jhon Aquilino at the F-FDTL, Headquarters, in Dili.

Callahan said that the signing of the agreement is necessary to conduct joint training in the future to improve the soldiers’ ability to secure peace in the region.

“The program will strengthen professional development, training, and exchanges between the F-FDTL and the Rhode Island National Guard and facilitate enhanced cooperation with the State of Rhode Island across government, security, economic, and social sectors,” said Callahan.

Four F-FDTL pilots had been trained by the Rhode Island National Guard who will fly the CESSNA206 aircraft to control the southern coast of the country on may 2023.

Minister Paixão thanked the Rhode Island National Guard for their commitment to support Timor-Leste in training and capacity building: “They are ready to train our personnel, from Alferez to the General post.

Paixão Passion was invited by the Governor of Rhode Island to discuss any particular areas in which both parties could cooperate in the future: “I will present to the Governor about Timor-Leste’s desire to undertake military education and training.”
