DILI, 13 february 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta has announced 21 may as the date for the country’s next parliamentary elections. 

The general election date was announced on monday (13/02) at the Presidential Palace. 

“Thus, I set 21 may, 2023 as the date to hold the parliamentary elections,” Horta announced today. 

He said that Timorese people will be mobilized for parliamentary elections, saying national and political leaders will have to embrace the decision.

Horta recalled that former President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres Lú Olo announced on 26 january, 2018, the dissolution of the National Parliament, and decreed early elections on 12 may, 2018: “The National Parliament took office and began its work on 12 june, 2018, and the House Speaker was elected on 13 june the same year.”

President Horta held a number of meetings with the Government, political parties, and electoral bodies to decide the date of the next general elections.
